Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when the couple move from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
